How Many Club Lengths?

One of the rules in golf that often causes confusion is how many club lengths you may take when taking relief. There is a simple philosophy to apply:

  • If the relief you are taking comes at the cost of a penalty stroke, you get 2 club lengths.
  • If you are taking free relief, you get one club length.

Some examples of relief when you are incurring a penalty are:

  • You have declared the ball unplayable.
  • The ball is in a penalty area (and you choose not to play it as it lies).

Some examples of free relief are:

  • Ground Under Repair (GUR)
  • Paths with artificial surfaces
  • Garden beds
  • Sprinkler heads

Some important things to remember when taking relief are:

  • When taking free relief, your club length is taken from the nearest point of relief.
  • You must mark your ball before touching it or mark the point of entry in a penalty area.
  • You cannot move the ball closer to the hole.
