How To Take a Preferred Lie
The process for taking a preferred lie is as follows:
You must mark your ball
You lift your ball
You may clean your ball
You place your ball within 1 club length of its original position no nearer to the hole.
Some points of note:
The club length does not need to be the club you are using. The standard measure is the driver. You cannot use a long putter.
If your ball moves once you have let go of it - you cannot replace it.
You may take a preferred lie and place it anywhere in the General Area. The General Area is any part of the course except for the teeing area, penalty areas, bunkers and greens.
Taking the above point into account, some examples of what you can and can't do include:
You may move your ball from the rough to the fairway and vice versa as they are both part of the General Area.
You cannot move your ball from the fringe to the green as the green is not part of the General Area.
