Rule - Penalty Area

Stakes, Hoops and Ropes

The stakes, hoops and ropes that are up to restrict access to various parts of the course are ‘moveable obstructions’. If your ball strikes any of these obstructions, you play your ball where it lies. You cannot replay your shot. If you feel you are at risk of hitting a moveable obstruction or it interferes with your swing of stance, you may move it. You must put it back after you have played your shot.

4th Hole - GUR

The left-hand side of 4th hole from the tee to
approximately 260 metres from the green is now GUR.

You may take free relief at the nearest point to where your
ball lies no nearer the hole.

If you are unable to find your ball and you are 'virtually
certain’ it has entered the GUR (which is anywhere left of
the white posts - even deep in the trees), you take free relief
at the nearest point no nearer the hole where you believe
your ball should have been.
You should consult with your
Marker where this point is.

There is a point where the white posts stop and the red
stakes start.
Any balls in the area marked with red stakes
are in a penalty area and the penalty area rules apply.

Mirror Mirror....

Sharon and Ralph Lowden recently had their bathroom renovated. Ralph's job was to clean the new mirror however after multiple attempts, he just could not get it clean. After complaining to Sharon that it was impossible to clean, Sharon investigated and promptly removed the protective plastic....

Practice Green Chipping

Please note that small chipping only is allowed around the practice putting green near the club house. You must only chip from within the blue line and any chips that leave any sort of mark on the green are not permitted. If you would like to practice larger chips, please use the practice hole at the end of the Lakes 9.

Top 16 team qualify

The John Barker Winter Cup is a 4 Ball Better Ball (4BBB)
Handicap Matchplay event.
Qualifying is a 4BBB Par round.
You team up with a partner and in the qualifying round you
count the best score of you and your partner on each hole.

During the handicap matchplay part of the event, 2 pairs
compete against each other and the player with the lowest
handicap goes to scratch (0).
All of the other players
handicaps move to the difference between the lowest
handicap and their own.
Example.

Team 1. Bill's handicap is 4 and Tom's is 12

Team 2. Jason's handicap is 7 and Mark's is 16.

When these two teams play each other, Bill goes to 0, Tom,
8, Jason, 3 and Mark 12.

They play each other in matchplay and Tom, Jason and
Mark receive strokes on the holes indexed according to their
handicap.
In the matchplay the winner of each hole is
determined by the player who has the lowest nett (strokes
less handicap) score.

Midweek Medal Winner

Congratulations to Troy Love who won the July Midweek
Medal.
Troy won with a score of +2 on a countback from
Adam Lawrence and Stan Haritou.

How Does a Countback Work?

When there is a tie in an event, the winner and subsequent
place getters are determined by countback.
There can be
multiple steps in a countback until a winner is determined.

Step 1: Best score on the back 9. If still tied:

Step 2: Best score on the last 6 holes. If still tied:

Step 3: Best score on the last 3 holes. If still tied:

Step 4: Counting back hole by hole from the 18th hole until a
winner is determined.

What is a penalty area?

A penalty area is marked with red or yellow stakes. At
Beaconhills, we only have areas marked with red stakes.

What happens if my ball is in a red staked penalty area?

If your ball is in a penalty area, you have 4 options.

  1. Play the ball as it lies (no penalty)

  2. Take relief from the point of entry. Drop the ball within 2
club lengths no nearer the hole.
    (1 shot penalty)

  3. Take relief from the point of entry. Drop the ball as far
back as you like keeping the point of entry in line with
    the flag. (1 shot penalty)

  4. Return to where you played your previous shot. (1 shot
    penalty)

Some points of note for penalty areas.

  • You may move loose impediments. (sticks, stones, etc.)

  • You may ground your club but you cannot improve your
    lie.

  • There is no such thing as a provisional ball if you know
your ball has gone in a penalty area.
    If you play another
ball, you have essentially made the decision to play
another shot from where the original shot was played
with a penalty of 1 stroke.
